101 Ways to be Really Happy: Step #26 –Stretch Yourself

The biggest problem with staying in your comfort zone is that when something “uncomfortable” happens, as it is bound to do at some point in your life, you will be ill prepared. Learn to welcome New experiences, even if they are difficult at first. Challenges, not only build confidence, they are stimulating mentally, physically, emotionally, even spiritually.

My personal belief about new experiences is that, because they open up new neural networks in the brain, they also open up new receptors for serotonin, our own homemade feel good chemicals.

You don’t have to change career paths, like I did, to create this kind of stimulation. You could:

–take up a new hobby

–learn something technical (I just started learning to use Swipe on my cell phone)

–read a different type of book than you are used to

–take a different route home

–join a club for a topic you know nothing about.

–or literally, stretch your body

Give yourself a new lease on life. Stretch.
